Despite its conspicuous yellow and black plumage, it is not easy to spot in the bright treetops due to its secretive habits. The easiest way to detect its presence is by way of its melodious song. Apart from its English species name and its scientific name “Oriolus”, the Eurasian Golden Oriole also owes its French name “Loriot” to its fluting calls. The Common Starling’s imitation of its song is, however, often strikingly similar. In our country, the Eurasian Golden Oriole is a breeding visitor for only three months before leaving for its wintering places.
