In dense coniferous woods it usually betrays its presence with its characteristic call. When performing its courtship display, the male follows the female with peculiar fluttering flights. To court the female, it raises its crest, presents its black throat patch and rapidly flaps its wings. At the same time the female makes an appeasement gesture by lowering its head. The female is regularly presented with food as a “wedding gift”.
