They feed on tiny, soft-skinned insects and spiders all year long. In order to survive and maintain important body functions, these tiny birds have to eat an astounding amount of food – as much as their own body weight every day! During short winter days, they must catch enough insects within 6-7 hours to survive the approximately 17-hour night in the cold. Northern breeding areas are vacated completely in the winter because the days there are too short for the little birds to collect enough reserves for the night.
</oembed>
