It occurs in Europe following autumn storms over the Atlantic and is regularly seen in small numbers in the Caribbean, it is, however, very rarely observed in inland areas. The first confirmed sighting in Switzerland is all the more astonishing since it occurred on Lake Thun, which is surrounded by the impressive scenery of the Bernese Oberland. The large distance from the coast did not seem to make any difference to this Laughing Gull since it spent the whole winter here.
