It is a gregarious bird which outside the breeding season is often seen in flocks. Until the first half of the 20th century, its breeding range also covered Central Europe and possibly even Switzerland. In those days, the Rock Sparrow nested on sunny, rocky slopes, often covered with open woods, as well as in ruins and even spent the winter in or close to the breeding site.
