It could become the third species to become extinct in Europe after the Great Auk (Pinguinus impennis) and the Canary Islands Oystercatcher (Haematopus meadewaldoi). Despite numerous expeditions, its breeding area is not known. Therefore any observation of this species has in the meantime become a small sensation.
