In its breeding plumage, it is adorned by a usually strong pink wash on its underparts. This gull species has its main area of distribution on the Black Sea coast, however, in the 1960s it immigrated to the western Mediterranean. In spring, single birds or small flocks may rarely occur in Switzerland.
