Its breeding range used to be restricted to Southern Spain and Africa. In the course of the 20th century, it began to settle in America and Australia and expanded its range in Southern Europe. The Cattle Egret first occurred in Switzerland in 1974. In the meantime there are sightings every year. Of all herons, it is the least bound to water and forages for grasshoppers and small creatures in meadows and pastures.
