Since ancient times, the stork has been deified and protected by a number of peoples as a harbinger of fecundity. Intensification and mechanisation of agriculture are responsible for the problems the birds have in providing their young with sufficient food. Further difficulties arise from their preference for wetlands, which have been increasingly drained, from collisions with power lines, from the use of insecticides and pesticides and the hunting pressure in stopover and wintering areas. Meanwhile, the White Stork population is increasing in Switzerland thanks to Max Bloesch’s ambitious reintroduction programme. If these proud birds are to survive in the future, we have to maintain and enhance suitable habitats.
</oembed>
