Because of the colourful males, the species was often kept in captivity. Already in the 17th century this duck was brought to Europe and for example belonged to the birds in the ponds of the royal court of Versailles. Attempts at the beginning of the 20th century to establish wild populations in Europe were unsuccessful. The birds observed on lakes and rivers in Switzerland have all escaped from captivity and often wear a breeder’s ring. Wood Ducks nest in tree holes close to the water and sometimes also in nesting boxes.
</oembed>
