The most important populations occur in the Alps, the Pyrenees and a few mountains in northern and central Spain. The Citril Finch prefers open mountain forests which are to be found just below the upper treeline and in wooded meadows. In mild winters, its song can be heard in Switzerland already from mid-February when the birds have returned from their wintering areas in southern France and Spain. Owing to late snowfall, they can also be temporarily observed at lower altitude or in valleys as late as May."}
