Its favourite food is Arolla pine nuts and hazelnuts. In autumn, it extracts the Arolla pine nuts from the cones, stows them in large numbers in its throat pouch under its tongue and thus carries them to storage places. The Northern Nutcracker performs an outstanding achievement, for each bird collects approximately 30,000 to 100,000 Arolla pine nuts a year. In winter, it sometimes has to dig through a snow cover of more than one metre to reach its cache. Despite the high recovery rate of over 80 per cent, many seeds are not recovered. Therefore the Northern Nutcracker plays an important role in rejuvenating mountain forests."}
