Bird migration
The migration research we do focuses on small birds, which make up the bulk of migratory birds. Our goal is to understand the temporal and spatial patterns of bird migration. We quantify mass migration across Europe using radar and trace the routes of individual birds with the help of geolocators. We want to know how migration routes and times are affected by variations between individuals and their physiology, and how environmental factors, both local and global, impact migration dynamics. A further point of interest is the influence of blood parasites (e.g. avian malaria) on individual migration behaviour.
