We only process personal data in compliance with legal requirements. The Swiss Ornithological Institute is subject to Swiss law. The same applies to data protection. Accordingly, your data are processed by the Swiss Ornithological Institute in compliance with the applicable law, whether we receive your data electronically, by post or by phone. Personal data are not shared with third parties and may not be used by third parties.

Extent of personal data processing
Our processing of personal user data is limited to data necessary for the functioning of our website and providing our content and services. We only collect personal data that are strictly necessary to perform our duties and services. Personal data are deleted as soon as the purpose for retaining them no longer applies.

- Google Analytics
  We use “Google Analytics”, a web analytics service by Google Inc., 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA, to track the traffic on our website. Google Analytics uses cookies (see 2.) that are stored on your computer. The information about a visitor’s website and internet use contained in the cookies can be processed and analysed by Google.
  The data collected by Google may be transmitted by Google to countries outside of the EU and EEA, in particular the USA. Google has, however, committed itself to the Privacy Shield Framework. - Cookies
  We use cookies on our website to ensure user-friendly services. Cookies are small files that your browser generates automatically and that are stored on your device (laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc.) when you visit our website. The cookies remain stored until you delete them. They help us recognise your browser on your next visit. For example, a cookie may record the contents of the shopping cart in our online shop.

  All social media plugins on our website use the two-click process, meaning that a plugin only starts to record your surfing behaviour when you click on it.
- Newsletter
  Our partner for producing and distributing direct mail is certified with the Good Priv@cy® seal for data protection (https://www.baumer.ch/unternehmen/zertifizierungen/). Data is transmitted exclusively via an encrypted connection. To keep addresses up to date, address information is maintained via the multisource database of Swisscom Directories AG (https://www.localsearch.ch/en/privacy-statement).
- Shop
  We use cookies to save the contents of the shopping cart. These data are deleted as soon as the order has been completed or the shopping cart has been reset to 0. We process the data entered in our online shop to allow you to select and order products and services and to enable payment and delivery. The processed data include inventory data, communication data and payment data, and come from customers, people interested in our work and other business partners. Data is processed for the purpose of providing contractual services related to operating an online shop, billing, delivery and customer service. We use session cookies to save shopping-cart contents and permanent cookies to retain the login status. The data are used exclusively to maintain the customer relationship between users and the Swiss Ornithological Institute.
- Competition
  We use cookies to save the competition status. We process participants’ data so we can arrange and deliver the prizes. Data is processed for the purpose of administering the competition. We use session cookies to temporarily store the answers to the questions. The data are used exclusively to maintain the customer relationship between users and the Swiss Ornithological Institute.
Data security
We use the widespread SSL protocol (HTTPS) for visits to our website. You can recognise whether a page of our website is encrypted during transmission by the key or padlock icon that appears in your browser’s address bar. In addition, we use other appropriate technical and organisational security measures to protect your data against random or intentional manipulation, partial or complete loss, destruction, or unauthorised access. Our security measures are continually improved as technology evolves.
