The Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach is a non-profit foundation dedicated to ornithology and bird conservation. It was founded in 1924 as a Ringing Centre for research into bird migration in the Alpine region. In 1954, the institute was converted into an independent foundation under Swiss law. From a one-man operation run on a voluntary basis, it has developed into an independent institute recognised both at home and abroad, with over 200 employees today. In addition, the Ornithological Institute can count on the support of over 2,000 volunteers. The Swiss Ornithological Institute has its headquarters and a modern Visitor Centre in Sempach. It maintains Regional Offices in Sion, Yverdon-les-Bains, Schaffhausen, Chur and near Bellinzona.
The Swiss Ornithological Institute monitors the native bird population, researches the habits of wild birds and investigates the causes of threats to bird life. It develops protection and conservation measures for endangered bird species and, together with its partners, ensures that the findings benefit bird life and nature. The Swiss Ornithological Institute also runs a care centre for sick, injured and orphaned birds. As the national centre of expertise for ornithology and bird conservation, it also provides information and advice to the public, the media and the authorities. Through school programmes, Environmental Education initiatives and its Visitor Centre, it raises awareness of bird conservation among young and old alike.
The Swiss Ornithological Institute is unique in that it is a private foundation, whereas ornithological institutes in other countries are state institutions. It is funded by donations from people from all over the country.
