Climate protection requires the sustainable and environment-friendly production of energy. However, the expansion of renewable energies can lead to conflicts with biodiversity. The use of wind energy in particular is problematic from the point of view of bird protection in certain areas. For this reason, Swiss Ornithological Institute Sempach is committed to the bird-friendly use of wind power. Wind energy plants are mostly planned outside building zones. This places high demands on planning and requires a careful balancing of interests.
The Red Kite is a particularly wind-sensitive bird species.
Birds are subject to an increased risk of collision with wind turbines during migration.
On mountain passes, there are very limited opportunities for birds to avoid wind turbines.
Wind turbines extend a long way up into the airspace. As a result, they alter bird habitats and pose a collision risk.
Access routes to wind turbines affect habitats.
When visibility is poor, birds can barely recognise wind turbines. In this case there is a considerable risk of collision, especially for migratory birds.

Bird-Human Conflicts
We provide information and advice to private individuals, authorities and specialist bodies on bird-friendly solutions when it comes to the coexistence of birds and humans – an area that is not always without conflict.
