Species promotion – Common Redstart

Promotion projects in orchards and built-up areas

The Common Redstart is a typical inhabitant of high-trunk orchards. Populations in Switzerland have declined sharply since the middle of the 20th century, so the species is now absent from most orchards. Populations have increased slightly in recent years in the Alpine region, in southern Switzerland and also in a number of built-up areas.

The Swiss Ornithological Institute supports farmers in a high-trunk orchard area in Oberthurgau/St. Gallen in implementing measures for the Common Redstart. In built-up areas, we show how protection and promotion measures can be prioritised in neighbourhoods with plenty of greenery and old trees.

Species Recovery

Wildlife conservation coordinates the development, improvement and dissemination of measures in favour of priority bird species that cannot be helped by habitat protection alone. Together with BirdLife Switzerland and the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), the department also coordinates the “Species Recovery for Swiss Birds” programme.
