• We monitor and assess population trends of bird species in bird communities in Switzerland.
• We study the behaviour of birds and their relationships with the environment at breeding sites, on migration, and in the wintering grounds.
• We protect birds and their habitats by developing technical foundations and supporting and implementing especially projects that benefit endangered bird species.
• We report the findings to decision makers in science, politics, government, and on the ground.
• We inform the public about ornithological topics, inspire enthusiasm for native bird life, and share knowledge about birds and their environment at all levels of education.
• We develop and support solutions for conflicts between birds and humans and treat wild birds in need of care.

• We promote and maintain cooperation with volunteers, especially ornithologists throughout Switzerland.
• Work together with kindred organisations, schools, government bodies, and other partners at home and abroad.
• Use the funds entrusted to the Swiss Ornithological Institute by foundations, sponsors, and other funding partners responsibly.

Since 1954, the Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach has had the legal status of a foundation in accordance with Articles 80–89bis of the Swiss Civil Code. It is subject to federal supervision of charitable foundations by the General Secretariat of the Federal Department of Home Affairs.
