Abstract

Each year, trillions of animals – from nearly weightless aphids and butterflies to 40-tonne whales – fly, walk, swim or drift their way across the planet in pursuit of better foraging conditions, safety and reproductive opportunities, linking communities and ecosystems worldwide.1 These migrations are largely directional movements from one destination to another and over distances that are often astounding.
