Klettgau in Schaffhausen is an open cultivated landscape characterised by arable farming and viticulture. The mild climate favours an above-average diversity and density of endangered species that breed on cultivated land. The Swiss Ornithological Institute has been recording populations of the brown hare and breeding birds in three core areas since the 1990s. The vineyards around Hallau form another distribution focus for many endangered species. Here, too, we record the breeding birds. Together with local partners, habitats have been enhanced and a model region for biodiversity-friendly agriculture has been created.
Thanks to the many years of work done by the Swiss Ornithological Institute and its partners, the Klettgau region in the canton of Schaffhausen now has richly structured agricultural areas with a high share of high-quality biodiversity promotion areas.
Numerous bird species benefit from the ecological compensation areas, including the Common Stonechat.
