Vor der Erneuerung waren die Fanel-Inseln von üppiger Vegetation überwuchert und hatten ihre Bedeu-tung als Rast- und Futterplatz für wandernde Wasservögel, insbesondere Watvögel, fast verloren. Um dem abzuhelfen, wurde eine umfassende Umgestaltung und Absenkung der beiden Inseln vorgenom-men, damit sie zu einer einzigen grossen Fläche aus mineralischem Substrat werden, deren Pflege grösstenteils durch die Dynamik des Neuenburgersees gewährleistet wird. Das Projekt trägt zur Diversi-fizierung der Lebensräume in einem der bedeutendsten Wasservogelschutzgebiete der Schweiz bei.
