The iconic bird islands of Fanel are getting a makeover Overgrown with lush vegetation, the Fanel Islands are currently struggling to fulfil their role as a resting and feeding site for migratory waterbirds, particularly waders. To remedy this situation, this ambitious project involves a major overhaul and lowering of the two islands so that they can offer a single large area of mineral substrates, most of which will be maintained by the dynamics of Lake Neuchâtel. In this way, the project contributes to the diversification of habitats in one of Switzerland’s most iconic waterbird reserves.
