Helping birds in Monts de Bex VD

Restoring light to a fading clearing

Between overgrowth on the one hand and the disappearance of isolated structures on the other, this clearing in Bex seemed destined to follow the same path as the majority of lowland agricultural areas, where biodiversity is still struggling to find a place. Under the impetus of the local landowners, the ‘Upswing for birds’ programme is supporting the redevelopment of this site, which has great potential for birds.

Details

Project objectives

The project aims to encourage farmland birds by countering the advance of the forest, while at the same time increasing the structural diversity of the pasture. With this in mind, a change of land use is being operated, with some of the cattle previously grazing the land being replaced by goats and sheep. A management plan has also been established to maintain and hopefully increase the diversity of flora.

Methodology

This clearing belongs to several landowners, who wanted to support biodiversity on their plots. The first measures have already been implemented, including openning up part of the forest, planting chestnut trees and creating groups of bushes within the pasture.

Significance

Historically, several species typical of open areas nested within the project perimeter: the Tree Pipit, the Red-backed Shrike, the Wryneck and the Common Redstart. These species will benefit from the enlargement of the clearing and the planting of patches of bushes within the pasture.

Results

Breeding birds will be monitored by the Swiss Ornithological Institute. Given that numerous other animal and plant species on the Red List have been observed on this site in the past, a qualitative assessment of the effects of the project on them is also planned.
