Le tendenze legate alle popolazioni dipendono da quanti individui sopravvivono, quanti vengono al mondo e quanti migrano verso o da una zona. I modelli di popolazione integrati analizzano congiuntamente diversi tipi di dati (ad es. numero della popolazione e dati basati su cattura e ricattura e sul successo della riproduzione). Ne risultano stime più accurate dei processi demografici e una comprensione più profonda delle cause delle variazioni nella popolazione. Lo sviluppo di tali modelli riveste un interesse fondamentale come interfaccia tra ecologia della popolazione e statistiche ed è cruciale per la diagnosi delle cause dei declini nelle specie rare.
