Many nesting sites for swifts and swallows are disappearing each year due to renovation work or the destruction of dilapidated buildings. The inventory is a tool for cantons and municipal authorities to help them anticipate any necessary work and take steps to conserve sites under threat or offset them. Furthermore, an inventory is the essential pre-requisite for defining priorities in the conservation of building breeders. The Swiss Ornithological Institute manages and shares data on the inventories of building breeders with partner managers.

Urban Habitat
Numerous birds can be observed in built-up areas. Our Urban unit is committed to protecting and preserving their livelihoods. Our buildings provide nesting sites for endangered building breeders such as the Common Swift and the Western House Martin. Natural gardens with trees, wild hedges and flower meadows provide food and hiding places for numerous birds. For this reason, we attach great importance to providing advice on how to ensure built-up areas can be designed to be bird-friendly.
