Conservation programme for Common Swifts and Alpine Swifts

Protecting swift nesting sites in Switzerland

In Switzerland, Common Swifts and Alpine Swifts primarily nest in buildings, finding crevices to settle in. The destruction of old buildings and renovation works cause countless nesting sites to disappear each year. Swifts are very loyal to their nests and struggle to find places to nest.

The Swiss Ornithological Institute compiles and provides information for owners, architects, municipal authorities and other partners on measures and possible arrangements for the benefit of swifts.

Unit

Urban Habitat

Numerous birds can be observed in built-up areas. Our Urban unit is committed to protecting and preserving their livelihoods. Our buildings provide nesting sites for endangered building breeders such as the Common Swift and the Western House Martin. Natural gardens with trees, wild hedges and flower meadows provide food and hiding places for numerous birds. For this reason, we attach great importance to providing advice on how to ensure built-up areas can be designed to be bird-friendly.
