Ecological infrastructure are interlinked areas that are of great importance for biodiversity. Such infrastructures serve to preserve, enhance, restore and connect valuable natural and semi-natural habitats in Switzerland. As one of the key objectives under the Swiss Biodiversity Action Plan, ecological infrastructures are to be integrated in all activities undertaken by the federal authorities, cantons and municipalities that have an impact on spatial planning. The Swiss Ornithological Institute was involved in the spatial analysis commissioned by the federal government and carried out by InfoSpecies.
The small-plot mountain meadow landscape on the southern slope in Obergesteln (Goms VS, June 2021) is a good example of a structurally rich, extensive cultivated landscape (Gilde 25).

Wildlife conservation coordinates the development, improvement and dissemination of measures in favour of priority bird species that cannot be helped by habitat protection alone. Together with BirdLife Switzerland and the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), the department also coordinates the “Species Recovery for Swiss Birds” programme.
