The black grouse likes a mosaic of habitats consisting of alpine moorland and pasture alternating with open woodland. Above the tree line, these habitats are linked to mountain agriculture. This sensitive species is being impacted by the loss of agricultural land, which is causing pastures to become overgrown, and by the increase in human leisure activity. In certain areas, the reduction in wooded pastures can be compensated for by forestry measures, but measures to limit disturbance (winter and summer) must also be taken, particularly around ski resorts.

Wildlife conservation coordinates the development, improvement and dissemination of measures in favour of priority bird species that cannot be helped by habitat protection alone. Together with BirdLife Switzerland and the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), the department also coordinates the “Species Recovery for Swiss Birds” programme.
