Species promotion – Woodlark

Structurally rich pastures and vineyards for a warmth-loving songbird

Only two regions in Switzerland stil have large populations of the Woodlark Lullula arborea: the extensive pastures and meadows of the Jura Arc and the sun-exposed streteches of Central and Upper Valais, where this species particularly appreciates the vineyards. The long-term survival of the Woodlark in Switzerland is to be ensured by gearing agricultural land use and habitat management towards the needs of this species. The Swiss Ornithological Institute closely monitors the status of Woodlark populations and plays an active role in promoting the species.

Species Recovery

Wildlife conservation coordinates the development, improvement and dissemination of measures in favour of priority bird species that cannot be helped by habitat protection alone. Together with BirdLife Switzerland and the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), the department also coordinates the “Species Recovery for Swiss Birds” programme.
