Grosses Moos is an important area for agricultural production. At the same time, it offers particularly good potential as a habitat for typical species that breed on cultivated land. Since 1995, the Swiss Ornithological Institute has been surveying the populations of selected breeding birds in the core zone over an area of 42 km².
The Yellowhammer is one of the mapped species in Grosses Moos. In 2022 we found 294 territories in the 42.3 km² study area.
The Red-backed Shrike is the second most common species mapped in Grosses Moos.
The Corn Bunting is threatened with extinction. Grosses Moos is home to one of the last Swiss populations.
